Mira Road is a suburb
in Mumbai located just north to the city of Mumbai,
India. It is part of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation
(MBMC) and Thane district but is also considered under
Mumbai. The word Mira is of Latin, Slavic and Hindi
origin, and its meaning is "wonderful; peace; propserous".
Mira Road is situated
on the island of Salcette. A marshy creek divides Mira
Road from Mumbai. Earlier, Mira Road was divided into
two main parts, Shanti Nagar and Naya Nagar with Sheetal
Nagar too just emerging. In recent times, several new
localities like Shanti Park, Sanghavi Nagar, Hatkesh,
Silver Park, Pleasant Park, Geeta Nagar, Golden Nest,
Jangid, Beverly Park, Evershine Enclave, Shrishti Complex,
Shanti Gardens, Poonam Sagar Complex, Poonam Garden,
Poonam Vihar Complex, etc have come up. Unique Heights,
Poonam Gardens near SK Stone, Mira Bhayander Highway
the 12 Storied Tower provides facilities like first
floor parking, the first of its kind in Mira Road.
Although it is officially not under
the BMC, it enjoys all the facilities available in Mumbai
like 24 hour power supply from Reliance Energy, telephone
services from MTNL, piped gas from Mahanagar Gas Limited
(MGL), and bus services from Bombay Electric Supply
and Transport Company (BEST). State Transport (ST) and
Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) buses run between Mira
Road and Thane.
The TMT is running its bus services
from Mira Road to Thane also the Mira-Bhayandar Mahanagarpalika
has started its own bus service under the title of Mira
Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT). The Mira Road
train (railway) station on the Western Railway line
of the Mumbai suburban railway.
Mira Road today is one of the most
growing areas in Mumbai. Thakur Mall, Cine Max Theater
, Rassaz Theater , Reliance Fresh, Big Bazaar, Asmita
supermarket, Spinach, Reebok Store, Subhiksha, Vijay
Sales and various other shopping outlets and malls are
present at this place. McDonalds situated on the Mira
Bhayandar Road off Beverly Park Road and Thakur Mall,
Smoking Joe's at Jangid towers, Cafe Coffee Day at Naya
Nagar and Thakur Mall, Pizza Hut and others are the
eatery that are present here.
There are many Educational Institutes
like NL Dalmiya School and management College , Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel Vidyalaya, Holy Cross Convent School,
St. Xaviers, Royal College, R.B. Kanakia, N.H English
Academy, St. Joseph's School, Shanti Nagar High School
and many more are located in the town.
For worship Small Ganesh idol are immersed
at the time of GANESH CHATURTHI at Shivar garden.(Sri
Sri Radha-Giridhari Mandir) Hare Ramah Hare Krishna
temple of the Isckon group, in Shristi has large number
of devotees visiting this place which also includes
devotees of foreign countries. This is a prominent landmark
of the area and the temple also organizes many religious
and cultural programs. The Saint Joseph's Church aka
Krista Shanti Dham stands as the largest parish in the
archdiocese of Mumbai with more than 22,000 catholics.
Jangid Temple is dedicated to Maa Durga, Shri Sai Baba
and other deities. It is among largest Hindu Temple
of Mira Road. There is also Shri Sai Baba Mandir near
Silver Park,Ganesh Mandir in Sheetal Nagar, Sri Swaminarayan
Mandir, Sector 10, Shanti Nagar, Jain Mandir and Gurudwara
, Sri Guru Nanak Darbar, in shanti nagar. MASJIDS (mosque)
in Naya nagar.

The skywalks, being constructed outside
the railway stations in Bhayander (west) and Mira Road
(east), are part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional
Development Authority's (MMRDA) project of building
elevated walkways across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
(MMR). Affordable property rates and peaceful surroundings
is the reason for many people buying property around
this region.
Construction of an underground drainage
is all set to start now for which all formalities completed.
Solid waste project is done at Uttan. Additional water
supply of 35 MLD from the M.I.D.C. Dam which was was
sanctioned two years back by Shri Vilasrao and announced
by CM Shri Ashok Chavan is completed which has reduced
the water problem faced by the town. Also the additional
100MLD is granted by the PM in JNURM project costing
100crs plus, which will reduce the water shortage problems.
A Municipal Hospital cum Blood bank
cum morgue center is under construction next to the
Olympiad building adjoining the Station Road connecting
to Shristi. A Medical Research Centre too is under construction
just opposite Rassaz Mall. Big builders like RNA (NG),
Sanghvi Group, Evershine Group, Asmita Group and Krishna
Constructions have now started to concentrate on this
part of the city. The under construction 2.5 million
sq. ft Orchid Ozone Mall is expected to create a tremendous
property boom in Mira Road since it is to become India's
largest mall with expected 13 multiplexes.
The MBMC's (Mira Bhayandar Municipal
Corporation) main office is located in Bhayandar (West).
Various Departments like Property Tax Department, Octroi
Department, M.B.M.C Transportation, Health Department,
Ambulance For Emergency, Library, Water Department,
Education Department, Birth-Death Registration Department,
Tree-Department, Advertising Fee Department, Animals
Department, Public Construction Dept, City Development
Dept, Accounts Department, etc are a part of the MBMC's
suit.
MBMC's First Election took place in
August 2002, first Mahpor was Shrimati Mayra Gilbert
Mendonca with voting for 79 corporators selected. Second
Election for MBMC took place in August 2007. Shri Narendra
Mehta (Second Mahapor) was selected by more than 50%
corporators. The first Nagar Palika election was held
on December 1990 for 47 Corporators and first NagarPalika
Nagar Adhyakch Shri Gilbert John Mendonca was selected.
As of 2006 India census , Mira-Bhayandar
had a population of 7.28 Lakhs. Other Result as per
2001 census: Males constitute 55% of the population
and females 45%. Mira-Bhayandar has an average literacy
rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 64.84%.
Male literacy is 81%, and Female literacy is 74%. In
Mira-Bhayandar, 13% of the population is under 6 years
of age. Mira-Bhayandar is one of the Leading City in
Maharashtra having a population more than 10 Lacs, and
has grown-up Economically and with a vast increased
in Industrial Field. Its own Municipal Corporation,
MBMC, now administers Mira-Bhayandar. And as per MBMC
2006 records population is 7.28 lahks and its approx
08 - 10 lakhs now and expected in 2011 upto 13.4 lakhs.
Mira Road is located north west of
Mumbai, just north of Dahisar. By road it is connected
to Mumbai by the Western Express Highway. The Western
Express Highway, as termed in Mumbai leaves the city
as the NH 8 (National Highway) linking Mumbai with the
west and north west of India. Important cities covered
on the NH 8 are Vapi (for Daman & Silvassa), Surat,
Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jaipur andDelhi.
On the NH 8, just beyond the Ghodbundar area is the
Virar-Vasai Area. Ghodbunder is also linked to Thane
by a highway.The Ghodbunder Road Highway has a direct
access to Mira Road, and from there on through the Dahisar
check naka into Mumbai's western suburbs. All it takes
is an hour's drive.
Kashimira is a point falling between
Dahisar Check Naka and Ghodbunder, from which a main
road connects that leads to Mira Road, Bhayandar &
the coastal villages of Uttan, Gorai, Manori & the
famed Amusement Parks - Esselworld & Water Kingdom.
In starting pointshivaji statue and octroi naka are
located and opp. Kashi Mira Police Station.
No one who strolls down Ghodbunder
Road today will believe that some years ago it was just
a port that handled horses, which is why it's named
